Weird fandom complaints!
Dec. 29th, 2011 02:06 pmI kind of like keeping these to this journal. I still want to use it for writing, but I also like having the separation of fandom complaints from my main account.
Today's oddity: People asking for information that is provided in the source material, or clearly not provided in the source material.
Happens a lot with Tiger and Bunny; seems there's often someone new going "how old is X character?" (sometimes even Barnaby or Kaede or Samantha, who are the only three characters we had an age for). It's very weird!
I don't know why they don't get the info (or notice the lack) from the show itself. To me it's like playing sudoku almost. Barnaby is 24, his parents died when he was 4, Samantha was 76* when she died, 75 when Barnaby was 24, 55 when Barnaby's parents died, Barnaby's parents died in 1957 because it's 1977 when he is 24, Kotetsu debuted as a hero 10 years before that so he was not a hero before 1967, Kotetsu's daughter is 10 in 1978, he hasn't visited her in six years in 1978, his wife had specifically died five years ago in 1977, thus their last Christmas together was in 1971, and Tomoe died in 1972, implying Kotetsu hadn't gone to see Kaede since her mom died. Jake was arrested 15 years ago, not 20, by Mr. Legend, which means Mr. Legend wasn't dead in 1962, five years before Kotetsu became a hero.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head that's "Definitely true", there are some more that can be inferred (such as, Antonio must be 1-2 years younger than Kotetsu because Kotetsu is expressly stated to be the eldest hero, and Kotetsu and Antonio were both in high school when they met)-- and it's fun, sort of like a puzzle you're piecing together. Fun, but not something I spent a lot of time finding the answers to, because all that information was readily apparent from the show alone, no extra resources needed. I guess what I don't get is why this information is evidently opaque for the people who keep asking!
*- I can't remember the exact age-- it might not have been 76-- but they did say how old Samantha Taylor was in the episode where they say she's been murdered by Kotetsu.
